Tracker, by Gary Paulsen, is a moving story that will show you the values of life. It is one book in the series of books by Gary Paulsen. Gary Paulsen loves to write books about the outdoors. Tracker was copy written in 1984. It is a realistic fiction book about a boy named John Borne who loves to hunt, and his beloved grandfather is dying from cancer. John must fight the stress of losing him. The settings are the woods and the Borne farm. It is a present story.
Tracker doesn’t have many characters, in fact, it only has three! The main character in the story is John Borne, a brown haired thirteen year old boy who loves to do chores and hunt. His grandfather is dying, which makes the story a whole lot more interesting. Next, Clay. Clay is John’s caring and wise grandfather. He taught John everything he knows about hunting. Clay is slowly dying from cancer, so he can't go hunting with John this year. Last is John's grandmother Aggie. That is what Clay called her. John’s grandmother is gentle, sweet, and most important of all, she is honest. She seems like she always knows everything about John. She is a very understanding person.
The main conflict in the story is an interesting one. It is that John finds a doe (a female deer) while hunting, and tracked it (which is how the book got the name) for two days without rest! He thought that if he touched the doe it would keep his grandfather from dying. That is the main problem of the story.
My favorite part of the book is the main problem which is tracking the doe. The reason I liked this part the most is because that is where all the juice in the story is. I recommend this book to those who enjoy hunting and adventure books. I would not recommend this to elementary school students because it may be inappropriate because it has a little harsh language and some gore. I do recommend this book to middle school students and teens. Tracker is just one of many books written by Gary Paulsen. Some others include The Hatchet, The River, Brian’s Winter and Brian’s Hunt. If you enjoy Tracker, you would enjoy the rest of the Paulsen books.
